Toulouse Space City, second control room

4,000 people gathered at the Cité de l’Espace to watch the takeoff. A giant screen was installed behind the Ariane 5 rocket.

When will the mission be considered a success?

After one hour and six minutes after its takeoff, Ariane 6 will have to release the first satellites. The success of this inaugural flight will only be complete with the successful landing of the upper stage in the Pacific, at the end of the mission. If all goes as planned, the flight should last around 2 hours and 50 minutes in total.

Nearly half of first launches failed

Historically, nearly half of the first rocket launches have been failures, such as in 1996 for the first Ariane 5, which nevertheless experienced only two failures in 117 launches. “It’s a first flight, there is an element of risk, we tried to reduce it as much as possible, we are confident,” says Philippe Baptiste, CEO of CNES, the French space agency.

What will Ariane 6 carry?

For its first flight, Ariane 6 will carry 17 “passengers” on board: 11 university microsatellites, various experiments and two atmospheric re-entry capsules, which must prepare the space cargo ship wanted by the Europeans to resupply the space stations. Since the last flight of Ariane 5 a year ago, the Europeans have no longer been able to put a satellite into orbit by themselves: since the invasion of Ukraine, they no longer have access to the Russian Soyuz medium launcher, and the Vega-C rocket has been grounded since the end of 2022 after an accident.

62 m high, two boosters, 540 tonnes… a technological monster

Ariane 6 has a re-ignitable upper stage allowing it to launch several missions into different orbits in a single flight. It is available in two versions. Ariane 62 has two boosters and Ariane 64 has four boosters. The choice of one or the other will depend on the energy required to send the satellites into space. For this inaugural flight, the “smaller” version was chosen.
