DJI couldn’t make more compact drones, until it found this new approach: that of a true folding drone. The future drone should potentially replace the Mini 4, while creating a new range.

DJI is definitely competing against itself. The Chinese specialist in recreational drones (but also intended for professionals) has no direct competitor, but continues to seek to push its limits, particularly in terms of the weight and size of its flying machines. After the Mini and the Neo, the brand could release its first folding drone next year, which could also take the name Flip.

On X, Jasper Ellens’ account once again bypassed DJI’s communications teams to reveal preview illustrations of the brand’s future product. In addition to a photo, we find a video, demonstrating the new system for deploying the drone, and storing it more easily, in an even more compact format. The system does not require any dismantling of the propellers, which are placed under the main body of the drone.

The whole thing is really compact and the propellers seem to have found a way to be well protected. Today, a DJI Mini 4 also has arms that fold up, to store the drone when not in use, but the latter does not have integrated propellers or propeller protections for that matter. With such a format, the future DJI Flip, or new Mini 5, will be closer to a DJI Neo. Hence the main question of knowing what equipment the drone will carry, and how it will be positioned in the range.

According to Jasper Ellens, the drone should be released next January, and carry with it a LiDAR. In terms of central processing unit, it would feature the latest O4 from DJI, with improved capabilities and performance.
