Beware of this big scam that threatens your banking information!

This is not the first time this has happened, but the threat should be taken very seriously. Experts at cybersecurity firm Bitdefender are warning of an ongoing malicious campaign aimed at stealing customers' Netflix credentials and banking information. Here's everything you need to know.

A sneaky scam

Since September, a vast campaign of fraudulent SMS messages impersonating the streaming platform has been spotted. And in fact, the latter is in full swing in Europe according to researchers. Quoted by Cybernewsthey therefore emphasize:

This covers 23 countries. Among the most affected countries are Germany and Spain, but the United States is on this list, along with , Greece, Portugal, Australia and many others.

Netflix customers are specifically targeted by the following message: “NETFLIX: There was a problem processing your payment. To keep your services active, please log in and confirm your details on (followed by a fake address Editor’s note)”.

There are some variations in the formulations. Thus, certain messages inform of a “failed in your recent payment”. This is of course completely false and Netflix will never send you an SMS for such a reason.

BitDefender specifies: “They want customers’ login credentials, personal information and credit card details. Phishing websites are specially designed for this purpose”.

How to protect yourself?

If users are specifically targeted (which reinforces the credibility of phishing), it is often because their credentials end up being put up for sale on the dark web. Experts also point out that some scammers use a slightly different method to deceive Internet users. They promise a tempting offer to encourage them to click.

To protect yourself, it goes without saying that you should never click on links or respond to such fraudulent solicitations. Keep in mind that you must remain calm and never panic when faced with these announcements. It is in fact by creating a sense of urgency that these manipulators push us to make mistakes.

What to remember:

  • Massive phishing campaign impersonates Netflix in France
  • Scammers claim your payment has been declined and you risk losing access to the streaming platform
  • Netflix will never contact you for this reason by SMS. You should therefore pay no attention to them and never click on the links present in these messages.
