France Identity, the application that allows you to carry your identity card and driving license on your smartphone, will soon allow you to authenticate using FranceConnect. As with your bank's application, you just have to open it to connect.
With the France Identity application, the government has a digital Swiss army knife. The software allows you to carry dematerialized clones of your identity card and driving license on your smartphone, or to generate single-use identity documents. Secondly, he will help store a copy of his registration document or other documents, particularly those related to health. The only condition for access is to hold an identity card in the new format, with a biometric chip.
France Identity has another little-known function: connection to a State service from FranceConnect. On the impots.gouv site, for example, you can use the application to quickly connect by scanning a QR code. The problem is that this solution is not really practical, since you have to put your physical identity card on your smartphone each time. A constraint that will soon disappear.
Face ID to connect with FranceConnect: the government simplifies authentication
France Identity update 1.3, which has been under test since December 2, 2024, introduces the possibility of activating FranceConnect authentication without having to take out your identity card. All you have to do is say yes once, then use your face or fingerprint each time you log in. A behavior similar to that of banking applications, which are also obliged to use biometric verification for each transaction.
When you first open the new France Identity, which Numerama was able to test by registering for the beta program, the application calls for activating FranceConnect authentication by scanning your identity card. Once this step has been completed, the authentications will work each time with a Face ID scan (or with its code). There will no longer be a need to scan your card.
Then, from any site supporting FranceConnect, simply choose the France Identity option and scan a QR code from the application. The connection will be immediate, without physical action.
The only incompatibility is the FranceConnect+ service, which still requires a physical identity card for security reasons (it is notably necessary to access the credits in your training account). Fortunately, the majority of public services only use FranceConnect.
How to register for the France Identity beta?
If you are impatient, it is possible to register for the France Identity beta now. To access it, go to this TestFlight link from an iPhone or to this Play Store link from an Android terminal. If there are places left (which is not guaranteed), you should have access to them.
