While Light of Motiram offers an interesting survival experience, it's hard not to notice the many references to Horizon Zero Dawn that make up its universe.

Summary

  • New open-world, “new universe”
  • An air of déjà vu

New open-world, “new universe”

Developed by Polaris Quest and Aurora Studio, Light of Motiram is an open-world survival game that pits players against mechanical creatures. Initially announced for PC, it will now be available on PlayStation 5, iOS and Android from 2025. Good news for players: the title will be offered for free on all platforms.

Here is an official description of the title:

In a world overrun by colossal machines, explore the vast open world, build your base of operations, advance technology, train Mechanimals and face fearsome bosses. Starting from the primitive age, forge a new path of development. Challenge the plot, survive with mechanimals.

Strange, but it feels like déjà vu…

The combat mechanics and the game universe seem to be heavily inspired by Horizon Zero Dawn. The “Mechanimals”, central mechanical creatures of the gameplay, are particularly singled out for their striking resemblance to Guerrilla Games machines.

An air of déjà vu

If Horizon: Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West are open-world action-adventure games, Light of Motiram opts for gameplay focused on survival in open areas, while retaining the idea of cohabiting with mechanical creatures. This last mechanic, already present in Palworld, raises questions about the originality of the concept.

From futuristic arcs to mechanical creatures to post-apocalyptic landscapes, the two games share a very close aesthetic DNA. The trailers highlight parallels in gameplay also with Capcom's Monster Hunter series, particularly regarding interactions between characters and mechanical creatures.

Social networks have widely relayed the accusations of plagiarism targeting Light of Motiram. Despite the controversy, Tencent seems determined to release its game on PC, PlayStation 5 and mobiles. Players, for their part, are waiting to see if the studio will manage to justify itself and offer an original gaming experience.

As a reminder, Palworld is accused of plagiarism by Nintendo, a debacle having launched legal proceedings… It remains to be seen if Light of Motiram will meet the same fate…
