Time associates with the New Zurich newspaper as part of a series of articles devoted to medicine and health. Find all the articles in this dedicated folder as you go.
To be healthy in Switzerland, it is better to be a wealthy young man. This is what several studies reveal on the differences in care pathways within the Swiss population. However, the national health system aims to be egalitarian and objective. Egalitarian, because it claims to treat each individual in the same way. Objective, because it is based on medicine based on scientific evidence. Unfortunately, if this second point is a fact, it is clear that the care pathway, from access to hospital treatment, is riddled with biases which undermine any possible existence of an egalitarian health system.
These biases take the form of prejudices which unconsciously or not affect the perception, judgment and behavior of health specialists towards individuals undergoing care. They concern the gender, age and socio-economic status of these individuals, but their geographical origin and their migratory background also come into play. And the accumulation of these biases is enough to turn the health system upside down.
