What you need to know about the first “Google AI” functions

Artificial intelligence has always been part of the Pixel DNA, even before the subject became essential. Google has been multiplying “intelligent” functions since the first generations and the current craze for LLMs. AI will play a central role in the Pixel 9 series that the Mountain View firm will present on August 13. The latter is also presenting its event under the name « AI… meet IX at Made by Google »but what does Google really have in store for us?

Android Authority has obtained exclusive information about Google’s upcoming AI features. First, we learn that they will be grouped under the banner “Google AI” as Samsung decided to do with the “Galaxy AI”. Google’s idea is to make its AI offering more readable, focusing on five elements. Some features are already available such as Circle to search (Circle to Search) on select Pixel and Samsung devices, as well as Gemini on Android smartphones.

Three new features will be coming soon, starting with Add Me (Add Me). This first new feature concerns the photo and wants “making sure everyone is included in a group photo”. It is reminiscent of the “Best Take” feature and could also be an improved version thanks to the latter’s AI. The second feature to look forward to is called Studio and is similar to an image and/or video creation solution. Google does not really detail the idea and simply states: “You imagine it. Pixel creates it”. A message that seems to refer to an AI image generator, but we remember that Google unveiled a AI video generator that can rival Sora at I/O 2024.

The last idea is called Pixel Screenshots and looks particularly interesting. This feature analyzes screenshots on Pixels and uses AI to facilitate the search for information. Many details (metadata) will then help the user obtain a summary or find information in these images. The idea is very close to Microsoft’s controversial “Recall” feature. The firm behind Windows has also decided to postpone this feature and Google wants to take a different path. Its feature will simply analyze the screenshots taken by the user and a local AI (Gemini Nano) will sort them. It will be possible to disable Pixel Screenshots.

Google will discuss these new features during the Pixel 9 announcement. They will not necessarily be exclusive and Google could offer them on the Pixel 8 series, presented as a range focused on AI. In addition, Google now offers 7 years of Android updates on its devices.
