As with the last three versions of macOS, Macs with Intel x86 processors will unfortunately miss out on two important features of macOS Sequoia: Apple Intelligence and instant audio transcription.

Each new version of macOS has its share of features reserved for devices equipped with an Apple Silicon ARM chip. A scenario that each year pushes Intel Mac users further away from a complete experience. And unfortunately, macOS Sequoia is no exception to this new rule. Unveiled in detail at the last WWDC, this new version of the system will indeed reserve new functions exclusively for “M” chips.

In their misfortune, owners of Macs and MacBooks powered by an Intel processor will however be less impacted in Europe than in the United States, because this non-eligibility only concerns Apple Intelligence and instant audio transcription. The first of these two functions, certainly major, will in fact be blocked in Europe following Apple’s reaction to the DMA, the new European legislation in force for several months within the EU.

As a reminder, Apple Intelligence is Apple’s new artificial intelligence platform. Deeply integrated into macOS Sequoia, but also into iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, the latter offers access to a range of generative AI and advanced experiences that, if we stick to Apple’s promises, can significantly boost the productivity of its users on a daily basis.

Although widely compatible with ARM Macs and MacBooks (it will work on a “simple” 2020 MacBook Air M1, for example), this function is reserved for Apple Silicon devices released after November 2020. For owners of Intel Macs, the die is cast.

The same goes for the instant audio transcription feature announced by Apple on the new version of macOS. The latter allows you to record audio recordings on the “Note” application, and to generate written transcriptions of these recordings at the same time, while combining them with other documents and adding, for example, check-lists. A powerful feature of macOS Sequoia that Apple will also reserve for Macs with an ARM processor.

The good news, because there is some, is that these two features of macOS Sequoia are the only ones that will be blocked on Intel Macs. All the other new features announced by Apple will arrive on all models with a T2 security chip. The feature iPhone Mirroringthe integration of reminders in the calendar application, the new window layout functions, or even the independent password application, will therefore arrive on both ARM Macs and eligible Intel Macs.

For context, here is the list of devices compatible with macOS Sequoia:

  • MacBook Air (2020 and later)
  • MacBook Pro (2018 and later)
  • iMac (2019 and later)
  • Mac Mini (2018 and later)
  • iMac Pro (2017 and later)
  • Mac Pro (2019 and later)
  • Mac Studio (2022 and later)
