Started in 1995 as an email distribution list, Craigslist grew a year later into an online service focused on the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2000, it began expanding to other American and Canadian cities. Last year it covered around 700 cities in 70 countries. Fortunately, its creator, Craig Newmarkcraig Newmark, has been heavily involved in philanthropic causes, often in the areas of journalism and cybersecurity. Since September, it has spent as much as $300 million to protect critical U.S. infrastructure from cyberattacks.
Two months ago, the semi-retired tech entrepreneur announced he would spend $100 million on cybersecurity projects aimed at protecting companies directly linked to America’s critical infrastructure. Today, it adds $200 million to that sum. He highlighted the fact that the United States “are currently under attack” during his interview with Yahoo Finance Editor-in-Chief Brian Sozzi on the Opening Bid podcast. In addition to donating money to strengthen the cybersecurity of vital businesses in the United States, Mr. Newmark is also doing his part by encouraging others with the necessary resources to join the fight.
According to the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (direct PDF link), the damage caused by cybercrime will increase from $9.22 trillion this year to as much as $13.82 trillion. dollars by 2028. It is therefore all the more important that authorities, at all levels, act before having to react, added Craig Newmark. Now aged 71, he wishes to donate his entire fortune “in the associative world” and help everyone live a better life, ultimately.
