AirPods with cameras: an unexpected development

The next evolution of AirPods has something surprising: cameras. According to a report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple plans to begin mass production of new AirPods equipped with camera modules around 2026. However, this camera is not what one might expect.

Spatial computing technology is here to stay

The introduction of infrared cameras in AirPods represents a significant step towards a more robust spatial computing ecosystem. Similar to the cameras used for Face ID, these cameras will prepare AirPods to work in conjunction with the Vision Pro, improving spatial audio experience and gesture interaction.

Consider the scenario Kuo describes: a user is watching a video with Vision Pro, and by turning their head, the source of the sound adjusts to emphasize the direction they are looking at. Additionally, the AirPods’ ability to detect environmental changes via the IR camera opens up gesture control possibilitiespotentially eliminating the need to physically touch the device.

Today’s report indicates, beyond the possible evolution of AirPods, a particular interest from Apple. With the advent of the Vision Pro and the Apple Pencil Pro that can rotate in the air thanks to their gyroscopes, Apple is looking to further expand contactless interaction. AirPods that can “see” their environment is an important step in this direction.
