In 2008, Microsoft introduced avatars to the Xbox 360, contributing greatly to giving the console a strong identity. Indeed, a bit like Nintendo with its Miis, these characters could be integrated into certain games, such as Doritos Crash Course. Also, Xbox had the good idea of allowing you to unlock exclusive accessories by achieving achievements in games. Unfortunately, with the arrival of the Xbox One, the follow-up to Avatars has always been disappointing, despite a redesign in 2018, and Microsoft will end the program.

After abandoning its Avatars, Xbox ends the program due to “low engagement”

You can now read the application's frequently asked questions Xbox Avatar Editor that it will no longer be available from January 9, 2025. That is to say that players will no longer be able to access the application on Xbox and PC consoles.

Note, however, that this will not affect original Xbox avatars in any way. Indeed, they can still be used in supported Xbox 360 games and it will still be possible to modify them via the application Xbox Original Avatars on Xbox consoles and Windows devices.

Microsoft justifies this end of the program by “low engagement”, but it must be said that nothing has really been done to engage players.

“Microsoft is committed to delivering exceptional experiences for gamers, including a variety of options to personalize their gaming experience with Xbox. Due to low engagement and our focus on providing alternative experiences for players, the Xbox Avatar Editor app will no longer be available starting January 9, 2025.”

If you've spent a few pennies on your avatar, then you'll be happy to know that Microsoft will refund “all Xbox avatar purchases from November 1, 2023 to January 9, 2025 on your valid payment instrument once the Publisher app Xbox avatar is no longer available. »

This end of the program won't surprise many people, but we can't help but think of everything that Xbox could have done by continuing in the tradition of the Xbox 360 avatars.
