An iPhone model alone occupies 42% of Apple's smartphone sales, and yet it is not the most popular.
The best-selling iPhone is also the most criticized
The iPhone 16 range has just been released and if it is unanimously unanimous due to the performance offered by these new smartphones, whether in terms of their SoC or their proposition in terms of photography, the lack of innovation is felt . In addition, Apple Intelligence is currently still not available in France.
However, It is especially the basic iPhone 16 that we criticize the most. And for good reason, if it has a very beautiful 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED screen, this is limited to a refresh rate of 60 Hz. A characteristic that we now find mainly on entry-level smartphones, where the iPhone 16 is still worth 960 euros! And there are many less expensive models, like the Samsung Galaxy A35 sold for 350 euros, that offer 120 Hz.
For this generation again, only the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro offer a Pro Motion screen capable of supporting a refresh rate between 1 and 120 Hz, which implies better fluidity, but also better management of the energy expenditure of the screen.
And yet, according to figures revealed by CIRP (Consumer Intelligence Research Partners), it is still the basic iPhone models that sell the most this year with 42% of sales, compared to 26% for the Pro Max, 19% for the Pro and 13% for the iPhone Plus.

Towards a major change for iPhones in 2025?
If the so-called basic iPhones continue to be the most sold despite their few changes, their sales percentage has still fallen since 2022 when it stood at 46%. It increased to 43% in 2023, then to 42% in 2024. This essentially results from the disappearance of the iPhone Mini range in 2022 and which occupied 7% of sales. Instead, we now find the iPhone Plus with 13% of sales.
If it is below all models, it shows that the trend is mainly towards large screens. Something that Apple seems to have understood well because if the iPhone 16 Plus would likely be the last of its kind, we would instead have an iPhone 17 Airwhich would be the thinnest iPhone to ever exist. A title that the iPhone 6 still held with 6 mm thickness.
In addition to that, Apple could finally equip all its iPhone 17s with an adaptive refresh rate of 120 Hz… If this is confirmed, basic iPhones could still gain popularity, unless it is the iPhone 17 Air that draws all the spotlight to itself…
