Rating app Yuka has gained a new feature that aims to put pressure on industry giants. The new app tool, which scans barcodes to decipher the composition of food and cosmetic products and assess their impact on health, allows users to report directly to a manufacturer the presence of one of the 55 categorized additives as “at risk” in its products. A button will allow you to contact the brand by e-mail in one click by sending a pre-written message, which can be modified. Another option allows the user to publicly denounce the manufacturer on the X network with a similar message and the hashtag “#balancetonadditive”. The app is working on adding other social networks, such as Instagram, according to TechCrunch.
“The public authorities unfortunately take too long to ban, prohibit substances that are controversial, we have to wait decades,” declared Julie Chapon, co-founder of Yuka on the France Inter channel. “There are also conflicts of interest. Faced with all this, the consumer also has the power to act directly,” she adds.
This new feature is currently only available in France and the United States. The app, which claims some 60 million users worldwide, could extend it to other countries in the coming months.
