Xgimi MoGo 3 Pro review: the ideal small portable video projector

The Xgimi MoGo 2 Pro won us over when it was released with its compact format and its automatic correction technologies, but it lacked a major ally: the Netflix app was not native and we had to make do with a web version poor quality. It's difficult to do without the most popular streaming application, a problem now corrected since the MoGo 3 Pro integrates a Google interface with native Netflix and a host of other applications.

We find the DMD 0.23 chip from Texas Instruments and its native 480p definition (960 x 540 pixels) which simulates Full HD (1920 x 1080p) by wobulation as on the previous model, but it is a whole new design which is offered with this version 3. The MoGo 3 notably includes a very practical integrated stand, but we will come back to this in the section dedicated to ergonomics.

The brightness is announced at 450 ISO lumens, a tad more than the 400 lumens of the MoGo 2 Pro. Here we also find Xgimi's ISA 2.0 technology, which promises automatic focusing and keystone correction. The MoGo 3 Pro is sold for €500 when it is released, but there is a pack with a tripod incorporating a battery for €580, potentially interesting for backpackers or those who want to enjoy a cinema session in the garden.

Image quality

The MoGo 3 pro can technically project an image from 40 to 200 inches, but Xgimi recommends a projection area of 60 to 120 inches for optimal results. To obtain a 2m base image as usual for our tests, we placed the projectors 2.4m from our canvas.

The Full HD image quality is appreciable, but obviously does not reach what we find on 4K video projectors which are generally much more expensive. The MoGo is not intended to replace a television or deliver a cinema image, serving rather as a second screen or traveling companion, remember. It then fulfills its role perfectly.

The speckle is in any case completely absent since the video projector uses an LED light source and not a laser. The image is very sharp in the center, but the wobulation technique used often makes the edges a little blurrier and the MoGo is no exception to the rule. However, it is not too disturbing in use. FYI, we do not find the fluidity improvement setting on this model.

The video projector lacks contrast (Wall-E).

The MoGo does not offer a Movie mode, only a Standard mode, a Game mode and a Desktop mode. It is this funny title which remains the best calibrated with a warmer rendering. The average color temperature thus increases from around 9000 K in standard mode to 7460 K in Office mode. It's still too cold, but much more acceptable. Color accuracy is often problematic on portable video projectors and here we measured an average delta E of 6.8 with a maximum of 11. Classic, and we cannot say that the colors are faithful.

In terms of contrast, we remain in line with the previous model with a ratio of 245:1 which is quite low and clearly far from ultra short throw video projectors, such as the Formovie Theater, but this is once again completely normal on picoprojectors of the kind.

Finally, the gamma is rather stable around 2 and the gray levels are therefore a little lighter than expected (the reference value is 2.2 for video projectors).

HDR

The MoGo 3 Pro supports HDR10, but only when content is projected through a streaming app. In any case, you shouldn't expect a different rendering from the SDR, but here are the measurements we obtained.

The EOTF curve cannot be perfectly followed, especially in the highlights due to the low brightness of the video projector. This effectively caps at 41 cd/m². This is better than the previous model and other very entry-level products, such as the Xming Episode One which barely reaches 17 cd/m², but half as much as the compact Dangbei Atom, not to mention the ultra-short throw models which can exceed 100 cd/m².

On the left, the EOTF curve in HDR10, 10% window; on the right, the HDR luminance curve, 10% window.

As usual in HDR on this type of model, the colors drift completely with a delta E which explodes to 17 on average. The video projector covers in any case 77% of the DCI-P3 space, 61% of the Rec. 2020 (rarely used in cinema), and only 85% of Rec. 709.

Construction & Ergonomie

Big change in 2024 on most Xgimi video projectors: the MoGo 3 Pro has therefore been completely redesigned compared to the previous version. It now sports a pretty metallic beige color and a cylindrical format reminiscent of a portable speaker. It weighs 1.1 kg and measures 20 cm in height and 9.5 cm in diameter. Once unfolded, it can be rotated up and down for better framing on the desired projection surface, and this is really practical for everyday use. No more need to prop up the projector with a book to change its inclination, we appreciate it.

Xgimi has been offering automatic keystone correction on its video projectors for some time, which is effective here. You therefore do not have to place the MoGo perfectly in front of your wall or your canvas, which is very useful in certain interiors. The projector can also avoid obstacles and will crop the image accordingly. The focus is also automatic and will be done as soon as you move the video projector. It wasn't perfect 100% of the time and we ended up with a blurry image several times. Fortunately, a simple click on the remote control will restart the focus and correct it in a few seconds. By the way, there are not many adjustments to modify the image, apart from the classic brightness, white balance and other noise reduction.

Autofocus and keystone correction are very practical.

The connectivity of the MoGo 3 Pro goes to the essentials, even more than the essentials since behind the small cover we only find a USB-A port and an HDMI port, the USB-C port only being used for 'food. A micro-HDMI port to be exact, and that's a bit of a disappointment, as this standard is really rare and the manufacturer hasn't included an adapter in the box. You will therefore need to obtain an HDMI to micro-HDMI cable or an adapter to connect your computer to the video projector.

The connectivity is really limited.

The Google TV OS is increasingly present on the video projector market and does the job. There you can find all the Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Molotov, Arte, etc. streaming apps. Good news, Netflix is now natively integrated! Xgimi therefore corrects one of the biggest flaws of the MoGo 2 Pro which had to go through an APK to use the streaming service, resulting in disappointing image quality.

The remote control is well finished and has a microphone for using Google Assistant, in addition to some shortcuts to applications like YouTube, Prime Video or Netflix. Unfortunately, it is not backlit, which can be annoying during full projection.

Finally, the MoGo 3 Pro is very quiet overall, as it did not exceed 33 dB. We appreciate that the ventilation of video projectors can sometimes become annoying. You can hear a slight hiss here, but the sound of the film should more than cover it.

Bonus optics and optional stand

As a bonus, Xgimi provides a small optic to place on the MoGo lens to use it as an ambient light diffuser. The image is no longer rectangular, but will encompass the room in colorful ambiances. This gadget will probably not be used often, especially since you have to be in the dark to take advantage of it, but if you ever feel like brightening up your evenings…

For €80 more, there is also a pack that adds a small tripod with the MoGo, which allows it to be installed almost anywhere without having to place it on a table or on the ground to avoid as much damage as possible. cropping and keystone correction. Above all, this stand includes a battery, allowing you to enjoy a projection outdoors or on the go without having to plug in the video projector. Be careful, it only lasts around 2 hours and you will therefore have to make do with a relatively short film or a few episodes of your favorite series.

The optional foot is very practical.
