What if AI really did us a favor, for a change? Across the Channel, the operator O2 launched last week Daisy (“dAIsy”), an AI bot whose mission is to ruin the lives of unwanted callers on the phone. She answers the calls and makes sure to hold the scammers as long as possible to irritate and frustrate them, as they do with their victims!
Daisy, the terror of fraudsters
And unlike phone scammers, Daisy doesn't need to sleep or eat. She can chat aimlessly 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In a video published by the operator, we can see Daisy in the guise of an adorable grandmother, a prime target for scammers. And the results are croquignolet: she manages to make several of them go crazy, it's a treat!
In one of these conversations, we can hear a scammer losing patience while Daisy has been talking to him for an hour. In another exchange, the bot provides false personal information, or even talks about its cat, Fluffy. “ While they're busy talking to me, they can't scam you, and let's be honest, I have all the time in the world », Says the AI in the spot.
Daisy has her own phone number, which O2's fraud teams have added to the lists used by fraudsters. “ By making the scammers believe they were targeting a real person and playing on their prejudices against older people, Daisy managed to divert their attention from the real victims », Explains O2 in a press release. “ Better yet, [Daisy] helped shed light on the techniques used by these fraudsters, thus helping customers to better protect themselves ».
Daisy leverages multiple AI models that work together. She begins by listening to the caller and transcribing their voice into text. Then, an advanced language model, specially designed with a touch of “personality,” generates tailored responses. These responses are then transformed into voice using a tailor-made speech synthesis tool. All of this is done in real time, allowing Daisy to hold a fluid and natural conversation, just like a human would.
According to the operator, the bot has already lost “ hundreds and hundreds of hours to scammers “. Revenge is sweet…
