The largest dinosaur ever presented at auction was sold this Saturday, November 16 for six million euros, fees included. An exceptional sale reported by HuffPost.
Vulcan, a 150 million year old Apatosaurus, has just made history. Discovered in 2018 in the United States, this exceptional skeleton was sold at auction at the Château de Dampierre-en-Yvelines, in Île-de-France.
Measuring more than 4 meters high and 20.50 meters long, this prehistoric giant is now the largest dinosaur ever sold in the world, reports HuffPost.
Bidding, which started at 1.2 million euros, quickly climbed to reach 4.7 million euros. Including fees, the transaction reaches an exceptional sum of 6 million euros. If the name of the buyer remains confidential, it would be a Frenchman in his forties, who plans to donate Vulcain to a scientific or museum institution.
Vulcan, a major piece of paleontological heritage
Exhibited since July 13 at the orangery of the Château de Dampierre, Vulcain has attracted thousands of visitors. Before being assembled and restored in France, its 306 fossilized bones were discovered after three years of excavations in the United States. This patient work made it possible to preserve 80% of the original bones, thus offering a specimen of exceptional quality.
The lucky buyer, aware of the scientific importance of his new acquisition, agreed that Vulcain remains accessible to paleontologists for future research. Several museums, including the Paléospace in Villers-sur-Mer and the Royal Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels, are already vying for the honor of hosting this unique piece. The auctioneer Olivier Collin? du Bocage summed up the enthusiasm of this sale by saying: “It's cheaper than a painting by Basquiat or Picasso, and it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. »
