Angry by DMA, Apple will not deliver Apple Intelligence functions to Europe this year

Several of the new features of iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia will not be released in Europe this year, including everything related to Apple Intelligence. At issue: the Digital Markets Regulation (DMA), which would pose risks to data confidentiality and security.

European iPhone, iPad and Mac users will be deprived of several new features presented by Apple during WWDC. All functions related to Apple Intelligence, as well as the copying of the iPhone onto the Mac and the new SharePlay functions (allowing you to draw on a correspondent’s screen and take control of it) will be blocked on the old continent this year. The manufacturer does not specify whether they will be available in 2025.

It’s stuck with the DMA

In question, not a technical problem but a regulatory one: “ We are concerned that the DMA’s interoperability requirements may require us to compromise the integrity of our products in ways that endanger the privacy and security of user data “, says an Apple spokesperson to Bloomberg. Rather vague remarks which deserve to be clarified – does the manufacturer imagine that these “ interoperability requirements » would force it, for example, to display the screen of an Android smartphone on a Mac?

The entire blocking of Apple Intelligence, which underpins dozens of new features — like creating images and access to ChatGPT — also deserves more detail. This is perhaps for Apple to put pressure (or even blackmail?) on Brussels, which is currently preparing a sanction against the company which does not respect the rules of the DMA… In any case, there are dozens millions of users who will suffer.
