LG Introduces World's First 50% Extendable Screen

LG hit it big at CES 2024 by unveiling its first wireless transparent OLED . The 77-inch LG SIGNATURE OLED T offers, as a bonus, impressive image quality. Suffice it to say that owning such a living room television should cause a sensation among any of your loved ones.

The Korean manufacturer obviously does not intend to stop innovating. LG, which now requires full-screen advertising on its TVs in standby mode, has just presented a brand new 12 inch expandable TV capable of extending up to 18 inches.

The world's first expandable screen unveiled by LG

At the LG Science Park in Seoul on November 8, LG presented the world's first stretchable screen capable of extending up to 50%. The prototype revealed by the manufacturer is a 12-inch screen that stretches up to 18 inches, while offering 100ppi resolution and red, green and blue colors.

« By applying a number of new technologies, such as improving the properties of a special silicon substrate used in contact lenses and developing a new wiring design structure, LG Display has improved the expandability and the flexibility of the panel, exceeding the initial national project objective of 20% elongation », Indicates LG.

The Korean manufacturer had already presented a first prototype “only” capable of extending by 20% of its initial size. Note that LG's screen can extend, but also twist and bend. “ Using a 40μm (micrometer) micro-LED light source, the new prototype's enhanced durability means it can be repeatedly stretched more than 10,000 times », specifies LG. The maneuver does not affect image quality, even in environments subject to low or high temperatures.

Remember that the manufacture of this stretchable screen is a national project launched in 2020 for which LG was designated as the main actor. Nineteen national companies and research institutes are participating. Of course, the extendable screen that the company has just presented does not yet have a release date. It will probably be a few years before we see this innovative technology commercially. At what price? Certainly extremely high.
