According to the results of an experiment conducted by the Detroit police, iPhones running iOS 18 automatically reset after 24 hours without a network connection. Although we don’t have a concrete explanation, this could be a new security measure for iPhones running iOS 18.
404 Media had access to a document from the Detroit (Michigan) forensic police. This document reports a surprising experiment carried out on iPhones. Indeed, the results obtained highlight a mysterious reset of iPhones, under iOS 18, after 24 hours offline.
Members of the Detroit police laboratory gathered several iPhones, all running iOS 18. These smartphones met the “AFU” (After First Unlock) criterion, that is to say they were locked and the code unlocking had already been introduced once. Important clarification: these iPhones were put in airplane mode, while others were placed in a Faraday cage, a space that blocks the waves.
But what was the result of this experiment? According to Detroit police, all the iPhones, which had therefore been disconnected from the network, reset themselves after 24 hours. The police then faced iPhones meeting the “BFU” (Before First Unlock) criterion, i.e. locked devices whose PIN code had never been entered.
At this time, Detroit police have no explanation for this phenomenon. If the bug theory cannot be ruled out, the most plausible explanation is that it is a new security method deployed under iOS 18.
This is because resetting the iPhone makes any hacking attempt much more difficult. As of this writing, Apple has not confirmed or denied the results of this experiment. Meanwhile, Detroit police do not view these iPhone resets favorably, since recovering digital evidence would become much more complicated, if not impossible.
