Every year, several releases attract more people's attention. In 2013, it was the announcement of No Man's Sky that would resonate throughout the video game world. Scheduled for 2016, it perfectly combines space and craft and yet, everything is not going to go as planned. We return to this history of video games in our latest JV Legends in podcast format.

During the 2013 Spike Video Game Awards, only one game was on the minds of the entire community: No Man's Sky. In its trailer, it presents itself as an infinite game with unprecedented freedom of action. The media are amazed by this and a very big hype begins to take hold of the small studio of 10 developers, Hello Games. But this pressure will play very bad tricks for the future.


A catastrophic exit

You probably know the expression “doing a No Man's Sky”. Eh, it lives up to its name. At the time, developers were riding the big wave of survival/craft games on PC (Rust, The Forest, etc.) and those about space (Star Citizen). Thus, No Man's Sky attracts the crowd by linking the two worlds. The player sets out to conquer billions of planets with the aim of arriving at the center of the universe, the latter hiding a secret. This little bit of mystery will be enough for the community to consider him as a future very big name in the industry. But there you have it, certain details should have aroused suspicion. Hello Games has its studios in Guildford in the United Kingdom, a town very well known because of a certain Peter Molyneux.

Sean Mauray, co-founder of the studio, invites journalists from around the world to Gamescom 2014. In the meantime, Hello Games signs a partnership with PlayStation which helps to amplify the hype. But the conference is a disaster and almost no footage of the game is shown. Fans will only be entitled to trailers. A long waiting period follows where big promises are made to the community, including a multiplayer mode. But it’s a massive blow that will fall on the studio. Two weeks before the official release on August 10, 2016, stores are already selling it at a high price. And that's the drama. One player, who spent 2000 euros to get it, claims that the game is full of bugs and that he reached the center of the universe in just two days.


Major free updates

When the game is officially released, it's a cold shower for players. No Man's Sky is experiencing some real bad buzz for a game that isn't even multiplayer. Sean Murray is becoming more and more discreet and a month later, the Hello Games studio communicates on the subject. They promise more actions and fewer words. Since release, there have been over 19 free major updates and No Man's Sky even exceeds its 2013 promises. It is much more fluid, very popular with the community and above all available in multiplayer. In short, it just came out way too soon.
