Days after shuttering its AAA games studio filled with A-list talent, Netflix is planning “truly never-before-seen gaming experiences” powered by generative AI.
The news on Netflix comes from the Gamesradar site, which reports a message taken from the account of Mike Verdu, founder and former vice-president of Netflix Games and now new vice-president of “GenAI for Games” at Netflix.
The latter announces “I’m finally ready to talk about what I’m going to do: I’m working on a ‘once-in-a-generation’ inflection point for game development and player experience using generative AI.”
New games from creators and AI
This “transformational technology,” as he puts it, “will accelerate the speed of development and unlock truly new gaming experiences that will surprise, delight and inspire players.” The latter should not be too alarmed by the recent departures of renowned artistic directors. Mr. Verdu predicts that Netflix will operate on a creator-first system.
“I am focused on a creator-centered vision of AI,” he writes, “that places creative talent at the center, with AI as an enabler and accelerator. AI will enable large gaming teams to move much faster, and will also put an almost unimaginable collection of new capabilities in the hands of developers on smaller gaming teams.” Verdu also assures readers that Netflix’s AI division has been “planned” for some time now.
A long-planned transition
“Disregard uninformed speculation in the media about changes in Netflix Games,” says the vice president. What you saw over the last few months was actually a planned transition. »
Time will tell at what pace the new “games + creators + AI” division advances at Netflix, because the old one has not produced anything despite the imposing team and allocated budgets.
