DECRYPTION – By analyzing the genome of this microscopic animal, researchers have discovered how it manages to resist phenomenal doses of X-rays.

With its little hooked legs and its plump body, the tardigrade has something “kawaii” (cute in Japanese). But like Pokémon, this microscopic animal has many powers. If it does not spit flame or throw lightning, it is indeed extremely resistant. It is notably capable of surviving in a dehydrated form for decades and coming back to life at the slightest trace of humidity. In this state of “cryptobiota”, it supports extreme cold (beyond – 250 °C) as well as infernal heat (more than 150 °C), unbearable pressures which would cause steel to crack or the vacuum of space.

But it is yet another property that most often fascinates biologists: even in its “active” form, the tardigrade is incredibly resistant to radiation. « The tardigrade can withstand doses of 5 700 grays »
