The Nintendo Switch has overtaken the Nintendo DS to become the best-selling game console in Japan. This is what the latest data from Famitsu, a Japanese media specializing in video games, reveals.

Earlier today, the outlet reported that the Nintendo Switch had sold an additional 40,000 copies over the past week. The console’s grand total sales now stand at 32,903,701 copies. For comparison, the DS sold 32,864,129 copies in Japan. The Switch achieved this record in its 377th week on sale, an impressive feat for a console that continues to show its popularity after several years on the market.

The Switch is also poised to achieve the world record for gaming console sales. As of March 31, total sales of the device stood at 141.32 million copies. For reference, the Nintendo DS recorded a total of 154.02 million copies sold. Just ahead of Nintendo’s handheld console is Sony’s PlayStation 2 (PS2), whose official number is 155 million, although some estimates suggest the real figure could be closer to 160 million.

The Switch, launched in March 2017, has attracted a wide audience thanks to its hybrid concept, allowing use as both a home console and a portable console. Its flagship games, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, have contributed to its immense success.

In comparison, on Japanese soil, Sony’s PlayStation 4 (PS4), launched in 2013, recorded sales of around 9.3 million units. Its successor, the PlayStation 5 (PS5), although still in a stagnant phase by its manufacturer’s own admission, has sold around 2.3 million units since its launch in November 2020.

On Microsoft’s side, sales of Xbox consoles have always been more modest in Japan. The Xbox One, released in 2013, has only sold around 115,000 units, and the Xbox Series X|S, launched in November 2020, has reached around 250,000 units sold to date. The Japanese market remains traditionally dominated by consoles from Nintendo and Sony.

With such a lead in the market, Nintendo’s hybrid console remains a dominant force in the video game industry. Nintendo officially acknowledged last month that the Switch’s successor would be announced before March 2025. However, it is not yet clear when the new console will actually launch, leaving the Nintendo Switch still enjoying a significant period of dominance before the arrival of his successor. Analysts expect Nintendo to continue innovating to maintain its leadership in the video game console market.
