Steam has a growing game catalog and its refund policy is changing little by little. The community is starting to ask itself some questions, notably that of a player who mentions his future death. He wonders if his Steam account could be transferred to someone through a will.

A friendly company

When we talk about Steam and of Valve, it is difficult not to know these giants of the video game world: the first is a platform developed by the second which is often an obligatory step for any video game player playing on a computer. The platform has become widely democratized over time and many players use it: as evidenced by the number of users and ever growing published games. Players’ Steam libraries fill up over time, sometimes reaching colossal numbers.

Something that provokes a question as surprising as it is relevant among one of the Steam users: Can I give my account, officially, when I die? It’s often said that rules are made to be broken, but Valve doesn’t really believe that. The rule which says that “Steam accounts are not transferable and cannot be passed on to family or friends” seems intransgressible, even if we mention a death.

Steam is a rental

It’s in a message addressed to customer service that the user asks their question. A rather interesting situation when you think about it, since it affects us all.

Hello Steam team. I have a burning question that needs an answer. I don’t plan on dying anytime soon, but when I do… Can I log into my Steam account through a will? Thanks for the answers.

It only took a few hours for the company to respond. Even if it was expected, their response still makes a slight pang in the heart:

Unfortunately, Steam accounts and their games are not transferable. […] a Steam account cannot be transferred by will.

Indeed, when you read the contract carefully, Steam is actually a lifetime rental. The games we buy belong to us as long as we are alive. The platform therefore does not have an official system through which to transfer or merge two Steam accounts. A will unfortunately won’t change anything… However, if you share your credentials (username, password, etc.) before joining the afterlife, the company will probably not be able to prevent you from doing so.
