“Coastal regions will be threatened”: what we know about the “Apocalypse Glacier”, which worries experts

Ua new scientific study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, based on radar data from the “apocalypse glacier” located in Antarctica, worries scientists. According to this study, seawater would have penetrated kilometers below the glacier, making it much more vulnerable to melting than previously thought.

Indeed, the salty and relatively warm water of the ocean causes an acceleration in the melting of the ice. This would result in a much more serious rise in sea levels than previously thought. Glaciologists used satellite radar data to take an x-ray of the glacier, now providing solid observations of the phenomenon.

What do we know about this glacier?

This “apocalypse” glacier is one of the largest in the world, its size roughly equivalent to that of the state of Florida. It is also the most vulnerable and unstable glacier in Antarctica. According to researchers, the melting of this glacier is already contributing to a 4% rise in sea levels. But it could ultimately lead to a rise in ocean levels of around three meters and thus become a real danger for coastal populations around the world.

Glaciologist Frank Pattyn explains to our colleagues about The Free the damage that could be caused by too high a rise in sea levels: “All coastal regions will be threatened by a rise in sea levels, especially regions that have more difficulty adapting. Here in Belgium, we can adapt by enhancing the coastlines with different types of protection. But this is not possible everywhere in the world because it requires investment. »
