The iPhone 17 would not have a Plus version, but an Air or Slim model which would have a much thinner design. We take stock of what we know.
Scheduled for 2025, the iPhone 17 would have a thinner version. We are talking about iPhone 17 Air or iPhone 17 Slim. In the future range, it would replace the current Plus iteration.
Recent leaks reveal several interesting details about this model which could become the thinnest smartphone ever designed by the brand.
An ultra-thin and elegant design
The first striking element of the iPhone 17 Air would be its design.
It could reach a level of finesse unmatched on an iPhone with a thickness of only 5 mm. The iPhone 16 Plus, for its part, stands at 7.8 mm, the same thickness for three generations.
Remember that Apple has already achieved the feat of further lowering the volume of the iPad Pro this year with a height of 5.1 mm.
To refine its iPhone, Apple could play on the design of the battery, in particular. Let’s add that it would also be light with an aluminum chassis like the current iPhone 16 Plus.

Why the next few years of the iPhone promise to be eventful
A smoother screen
The iPhone 17 Air won’t just be thinner. According to Haitong Securities analyst Jeff Pu, it could also offer a 6.6-inch screen.
Data supplemented by Ross Young of MacRumors which indicates that Apple would also introduce LTPO technology ((Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) on its basic iPhones and therefore this iPhone 17 Air. This offers a variable refresh rate from 1 to 120Hz.
It allows for a smoother visual experience as well as better management of energy consumption. An ordinary function on Android smartphones, but which is still only reserved for Pro models from Apple (ProMotion).
Performance: A19 chip and 8 GB of RAM
On the performance side, the iPhone 17 Air would be powered by the new A19 chip, promising significant gains in power and energy efficiency compared to the A18 which currently powers the iPhone 16 Plus.
However, this chip would retain an N3P engraving at 3 nanometers from TSMC, as explained by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. For a 2nm chip, we would have to wait until 2026 and the iPhone 18 Pro. Only they would be entitled to it.
The iPhone 17 Air would also be equipped with 8 GB of RAM, again to ensure a smooth multitasking experience and especially support heavy Apple Intelligence tasks.
Camera: a minimalist, but powerful approach
Thunderbolt if it’s true. Apple could decide to do without a rear lens. Only a 48-megapixel main sensor would remain, probably a wide-angle. So no more 12 Mpx ultra-wide-angle.
The manufacturer would compensate for the reduced number of sensors with advanced software optimization. It’s a little hard to believe this rumor, but remember that Google pulled the rug out from under all the competition in 2018 with its Pixel 3 equipped with a single sensor. All his genius was based on fine algorithms.
The front photo sensor would double its definition, going from 12 to 24 Mpx. On the other hand, it would still be contained in the same pill. Only the Pro models would benefit from a reduced Dynamic Island thanks to the implementation of FaceID sensors under the screen.
