Two conferences and workshops on light and sound will be offered the next two Fridays by Matthias Büchner

For the first time, the MJC is offering exciting scientific meetings in its premises as part of the Year of Physics. This project, unique to St Sulpice and intended for young middle and high school students (and their families of course), is fully in line with the objectives of the MJC: to awaken curiosity and encourage lifelong learning. Thus, two exceptional conferences/workshops will be led by Matthias Büchner, researcher at the CNRS. These interactive workshops will be followed by a friendly time, allowing young people to discover and explore fascinating concepts of modern physics: geometric optics and wave interference. The first, “The Light Bends” will take place on Friday May 24, 2024 at 6:30 p.m. A ray of light propagates straight through the air. However, when it encounters a dense medium, it is deflected, and the phenomenon of optical refraction is observed. This phenomenon is omnipresent in our daily life, we use lenses for our glasses and to take photos. This conference presents the basics of optical refraction. The public is invited to participate in experiments and measurements using several educational kits. We will also manipulate a model of the human eye to understand our super power of visual ability. The public is invited to bring a “college type” calculator.

The second, “The sound beat of light waves”, will be held on Friday May 31 at 6:30 p.m. Waves are omnipresent in our daily lives. They are characterized by an amplitude, a wavelength and a frequency. Two waves can superimpose causing the phenomenon of interference. Light can be described as a wave. This conference shows an optical interferometer where we will discover its settings and capabilities. Registration: Free. Reservations: 05 63 40 01 15 / [email protected].
