iPhone: annoying photos reappear due to a bug

An annoying issue is affecting some iPhone users, according to a Reddit thread spotted by MacRumors. Since they updated their smartphones to the iOS 17.5 version of its mobile operating system, photos that had been deleted, sometimes for a very long time, have reappeared in the “Recent” album of their photo library. According to The Verge, testers of the beta version of this same mobile operating system had already reported this annoying bug a week ago.

“I wanted to send a photo to my partner and saw that the last photos were sexually explicit content that we had done years ago when we were living apart (Covid, etc). But WTF. The photos had been permanently deleted,” wrote the person who started the discussion thread expressing their discomfort. Other users of the community platform then reported similar cases, reports the specialized site.

As a reminder, Apple’s Photos application has a “Recently Deleted” album which keeps deleted images for 30 days, allowing the user to possibly restore them. After this period, they are normally automatically deleted. However, the reported bug raises privacy issues, with content apparently being kept longer than promised by Apple, which has not yet commented on the situation.

The hypothesis of a synchronization error with iCloud has been put forward. However, one user said he noticed the return of an old deleted photo when he did not synchronize his cell phone and did not use Apple’s online storage service.
