Android Auto will become even more interesting with this big update from Google

Google has just announced a nice technical overhaul of Android Auto and Android Automotive OS. The number of applications compatible and displayed on car screens is expected to increase massively. Enough to make Android Auto and Automotive OS much more practical for drivers.

On the occasion of Google I/O 2024, the Mountain View giant is evolving Android Auto and Android Automotive OS. Remember that the first is to connect your Android smartphone to your car and display content on the latter’s screen. While the second is a full-fledged operating system, which works without a smartphone. This is what we find at Renault, notably with the Mégane E-Tech, the electric Scenic but also the new Renault 5 E-Tech.

Until now, developers who wanted to make an application compatible with Android Auto, or available on the Android Automotive OS Play Store, had to go through several steps. Above all, developers had to develop a special version, and have it validated by Google.

More apps with a simpler process

From now on, all this will be much easier, thanks to the new program called “ Car ready mobile apps”. The idea is simple: Google will proactively check that applications are compatible with Android Auto and Android Automotive OS, without the developer having to submit a request. To do this, the application simply needs to be compatible with wide screens.

This type of application will only be available when the car is parked, and will be displayed on the car’s central screen. To go further, and launch the application while driving and/or on the screen behind the steering wheel (or on any other screen in the car), the developer will have to work a little more.

But be careful, because each manufacturer should always remain in control of the applications available on their car, as is currently the case. This is a shame, because it means that some cars have fewer apps than others, even though they are compatible.

Easy work for developers

To facilitate the work of developers, Google will launch several emulators, to precisely emulate the different sizes and shapes of screens found in a car. It will also be possible to test applications on Pixel tablets. We wonder why all this wasn’t already possible.

Google thus announces, as a result, the arrival of numerous compatible applications. This is the case, for example, of Angry Birds on Automotive OS, but also the arrival of Google Cast or even Uber on Android Auto. Practical for VTC.
