Mercedes-AMG reportedly working on an electric exotic

Mercedes-Benz’s performance division AMG is reportedly working on developing an all-electric exotic. The model would be launched before the end of this decade, according to what the Autocar site reports.

The publication states that the super car would be inspired by the Vision One-Eleven concept that was shown last year. This model was built as a tribute to the C111 series of technology demonstrators launched in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s.

The concept also served as a showcase for axial flux motors developed by YASA, an expert in high-performance electric motors acquired by Mercedes in 2021. Axial flux motors are lighter and smaller than conventional radial flux motors of the same power , but their manufacture is more difficult, which makes them much less profitable.

Mercedes plans to build axial flow motors at a factory in Berlin, with the first application likely to be a high-roof sedan based on AMG’s new AMG.EA electric platform, expected to launch within the next 12 months. Prototypes of this model, which will be AMG’s first electric vehicle, have been seen testing on several occasions.

One of YASA’s axial flux motors generates 489 horsepower, while weighing only 53 pounds. Mercedes is reportedly studying several configurations, including three or four engines.

The crux of the matter with a performance model is weight; the latter must be reduced as much as possible. With lightweight units, anything becomes possible.

As for the planned super car, it should also use the AMG.EA platform and, according to what the Autocar site reports, it will be more efficient than the extended roof sedan, as well as AMG’s One prototype.

This car is the lap record holder for a production car at the Nürburgring, with a time of 6:35.183, set in 2022.

Although Mercedes recently announced a breakthrough in the development of rather lightweight and energy-dense solid-state batteries, Autocar reports that the planned super car would stick to liquid-type lithium-ion batteries.

AMG has extensive experience in electric power. It first tested the waters in 2014 with the SLS AMG Electric Drive. At the time, it was the fastest and most powerful electric vehicle on the market, with 740 horsepower. Since then, AMG has gained more experience within its program, particularly in the areas of energy discharge and recovery.

In short, quietly, Mercedes-AMG is paving the way for an all-electric future in terms of performance.
