The next major evolution of Windows 11 will present an important change on new installations: the activation of BitLocker encryption by default. This decision will not be without consequences in certain cases.

BitLocker is a software encryption technology for partitions. It has existed since Vista and is traditionally included with the Pro and Enterprise editions of Windows. Since Windows 10 Pro, it is not uncommon to find laptops on the market whose disk is already encrypted.

In theory, this full encryption, based on XTS-AES 128 or 256 bits, allows data protection. Indeed, if the device is stolen, the data will not be accessible without the key. At least this is the desired effect, because this protection is not absolute.

Microsoft has the idea of generalizing BitLocker to all versions of Windows 11, including the Home edition, on all new installations. Unless the publisher communicates extensively about this change, however, there will be problems.
