After ChatGPT, SearchGPT? OpenAI wants to compete with Google

A new report from Reuters claims that OpenAI, which is behind ChatGPT, aims to compete with the world’s most widely used search engine. This is something that even Apple has resigned itself to, since Google has been installed by default on its Safari browser for years. The Apple firm has already publicly stated that Google was so good in its field that it was more interesting to collaborate with than to compete.

The arrival of artificial intelligence could, however, change things, thanks to the rapid learning possibilities it offers. The Mountain View-based company has dominated the search market since 2011, after overtaking Yahoo, and now has an unquestionable monopoly. 91.37% of internet searches were carried out via Google in 2023! But who better than the company OpenAI to try to change the situation?

An announcement this Monday?

Before publishing its report, Reuters contacted OpenAI for information on the matter, but the company declined to comment. Shortly after the Reuters publication however, OpenAI published on the announcement of a live conference on MondayFor :

demo some ChatGPT and GPT-4 updates.

In the process, CEO Sam Altman published on X, to deny Reuters’ comments:

not gpt -5, not a search engine, but we’ve been working hard on new things that we think people will love! It’s like magic to me.

The CEO remains moderate in his remarks. A wise decision when we see the turn of events for certain projects which claimed to be able to replace a GAFAM thanks to AI. We are thinking in particular of the Rabbit R1. It is better to avoid this kind of statement when nothing is done.

Like magic?

It is unclear what will be presented on Monday, but Reuters maintains that it could be an alternative to Google, despite Sam Altman’s denial. Reuters would also keep the information from two sources close to the case. Let’s also take into consideration the fact that Google is expected to present AI features at its Google I/O conference on May 14, 2024, the day after the OpenAI live.

The choice of the date by OpenAI also raises questions. We could believe that it was an attempt by Microsoft to tease Google, through OpenAI. As a reminder, Microsoft has invested 10 billion in OpenAI, and therefore maintains close relations with the company.

Furthermore, the fact that Sam Altman speaks of AI functionalities “like magic” reminds us of Sora, the artificial intelligence video generator from OpenAI.
