In 2017, the launch of the Nintendo Switch revolutionized the model of video game consoles by offering a hybrid machine, both an individual portable console and a multiplayer living room console.

VIDEO GAMES – Patience and length of time… In 2017, the release of the Nintendo Switch caused an unexpected change in the global console war between the three main manufacturers: Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. This is why Nintendo has been particularly careful in recent years about the way it announces the succession of its latest addition.

It is now done (or almost) this Tuesday, May 7, since Shuntaro Furukawa, boss of Nintendo, himself addressed fans of the Japanese brand by revealing that a “ announcement regarding the successor to the Nintendo Switch » would be done before March 2025.

The end of a very long suspense for all enthusiasts who are impatiently awaiting the future model, nicknamed while awaiting any officialization “ Switch2 “.

But as Shuntaro Furukawa explained very well, you will have to have a little patience before knowing more. And he warned the fans: “ Be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor » during Nintendo Direct (a regular meeting of the manufacturer on the future of its games, consoles, and licenses) for the second half of 2024.

A message that is surprisingly clear and enigmatic, of which Nintendo has the secret when it comes to creating public enthusiasm.

The (discreet) queen of modern consoles

It must be said that nine years after the release of the Switch, the bet on a hybrid console (both portable and home) has all the makings of a success. The Switch can even boast of having become the third best-selling console in the world at the beginning of 2023, according to the specialist publication Polygon. It ranks behind the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation 2, at the top of this ranking. However, these two consoles were released in 2004 and 2000 respectively, while the Switch only appeared in 2017, proof of the unprecedented enthusiasm around it.

To date, and according to figures provided by the Japanese firm, 141.32 million copies have been sold, which brings it very close to the DS and the PS2, whose sales are around 160 million copies. Except that the latter two are no longer produced.

An exception, even an anomaly in the modern video game world, the Nintendo Switch has a catalog of essential games which remains almost unchanged since 2017. And certain games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild continue to sell at a high price, even though they arrived on the market at the same time as the Switch.

But despite some major successes in recent years with Animal Crossing: New Horizons (2020), The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (2023) or this year again with Super Mario Bros Wonder, the Switch seemed to gradually reach the end of its journey. Especially since its direct competitors have already been releasing their latest generation console for several years now: the PS5 for Sony and the Xbox Series (S or X) for Microsoft. Reason why the wait around the announcement of a new Nintendo console is becoming untenable for some fans. They now know what (or rather when) to expect.
