Apple is preparing a new chip specifically designed to control AI in data centers, according to reports.

At least that’s what the Wall Street Journal reveals. According to the latter, the firm would prepare AI chips for large data centers, which could then potentially be used to drive Apple’s own artificial intelligence.

Tech giants, including Google, Meta, Salesforce, Microsoft and therefore Apple, have been in a race against time to integrate generative and other AI capabilities into their products for some time now. For example, Microsoft has added its Copilot to Windows, while Meta and Google are also experimenting with their version of a ChatGPT-type intelligent assistant.

According to rumors, Apple will introduce a series of features based on generative AI into its new iOS operating system at its WWDC conference in June. Training and maintaining such an AI model, however, requires a lot of computing power. The new Apple chips should contribute to this.

Apple began designing custom chips for its hardware several years ago. As a result, new laptops and iMacs now contain Apple’s own M3 chips.
