The Lanaudière Festival is pleased to reveal that Farah Alibay, the irresistible aerospace engineer who grew up in Joliette, will be the headliner during the opening concert on July 6 with the Orchester de l’Agora and its conductor founder Nicholas Ellis.

In a concert in a unique format, Farah will take the public on an expedition through our solar system, with The planets by Gustav Holst in the background. In addition to this work, having served as inspiration to John Williams for the music of Warsthe program will be completed by Orion, by Quebec composer Claude Vivier. Farah explains the festival to the public in Lanaudière the characteristics of each of the planets, in addition to talking her experience as a young aerospace engineer who made her way to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory from . NASA images as well as photographs from Farah Alibay’s personal archives will be broadcast on the giant screens of the Fernand-Lindsay Amphitheater.

New free activities!

The Festival de Lanaudière is also pleased to announce the addition of free activities to its summer programming announced last March. In addition to the outdoor cinema evenings, the concert Opéra-Bonbon: the gourmet adventure of Hansel and Gretel on July 18 at the Boisé of the cultural crossroads of Notre-Dame-des-Prairies and a tribute to the Festival Mémoire et Racines on July 24 at Place Bourget, are added:

  • Musical yoga sessions with Uwe Neumann (sitar) and Yuki Isami (flute), July 6 and 13 at 8 a.m. on Saint-Jean-Bosco beach in Saint-Charles-Borromée

  • A choral singing workshop for those who want to let loose by singing and improvising in choir, August 3 at 10 a.m., at Parc Casavant-Desrochers.

  • The return of the Open Day at the Amphithéâtre Fernand-Lindsay, on July 18, 2024, with music discovery activities for the whole family, including the concert The revolt of the elders with Arion Baroque Orchestra
    A presentation by Promutuel Assurance, in collaboration with Joliette cultural stop
  • A free artists’ mass at Joliette Cathedral, with the Choir of the Joliette Art Museum and three soloists in Gounod’s Solemn Mass of Sainte-Cécile.

ABOUT FARAH ALIBAY

Farah Alibay is a Quebec aerospace engineer. Born in (Quebec, Canada), she spent much of her childhood in Joliette (Quebec) and her adolescence in Manchester ( Kingdom) tinkering with all kinds of projects and being fascinated by space and exploration. These passions led her to pursue a bachelor’s and master’s degree in aerospace and aerothermal engineering from the University of Cambridge (Cambridge, UK) before returning to North to pursue a doctorate in aerospace engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Boston, USA) with a concentration in systems engineering. In 2014, she joined NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) where she was part of the Mars 2020 mission, working on the Perseverance rover, which landed on Mars in February 2021, and the Ingenuity helicopter, which conducted the first controlled flight on another planet in April 2021. Before joining this team, she worked on several other missions, including the Mars Lander InSight and the Mars Cube One (MarCO) CubeSats. Since 2022, she has been the engineer in charge of flight systems for the SPHEREx telescope, an infrared telescope which will be launched in a few years.
