On the App Store, Apple has full powers, such as not authorizing an app or a game. But with new European regulations, certain banned apps will make a comeback.
Epic Games versus Apple is a fight that has been going on for quite some time. The Cupertino company had in fact banned Fortnite because Epic Games wanted to bypass the App Store in payment methods. But for some time now, two things have changed: the European Union’s DMA (Digital Markets Act), which forces the Apple brand to open up to third-party app stores, and a legal fight between the two firms which resulted in the confirmation of the return of Fortnite on iPhone, thanks to the opening of an iOS version of the Epic Games Store.
Until recently, Apple’s tablet was not yet affected by DMA, and therefore, no Fortnite on it.
Except that everything has recently changed. Indeed, the European Commission recently decided: the iPad will also be affected by the Digital Markets Act. Excellent news for Epic Games which rushed to announce on X the return of Fortnite and the arrival of the Epic Games Store on iPadOS.
All this will nevertheless remain limited to Europe, because Apple does not seem to have any intention of making European regulations its new standard…
