The race for artificial intelligence has its advantages, but also its disadvantages: it can in particular have an impact on the performance of your computer. Some manufacturers have decided to clarify the situation, and this can help you see things more clearly.

Artificial intelligence is everywhere, or almost: what is certain is that In a few years, it will be difficult to imagine buying a high-tech device that doesn’t use AI, and the same will be true for computers. Today, we mainly use artificial intelligence from a web browser, via a remote server. However, with certain AI, notably Copilot in Windows 11, the components associated with calculation methods are increasingly in demand.

But then, how do you know if you have a computer that is suitable for artificial intelligence? This is a real question, and the answer is not necessarily easy to find.

Dell’s answer to ‘AI-enabled Windows computers’

In a support page put online on April 9, the Dell brand answers questions surrounding this subject. “These computers are equipped with specialized hardware and software to efficiently handle AI and machine learning tasks. They are designed to boost productivity, unleash creativity and transform the way we work”, can we read on the page.

Among the elements presented as being essential to benefit from an optimal user experience with AI, there is the neural processing unit, or NPU. “NPUs are optimized to handle the complex calculations required by Deep Learning algorithms”explains Dell. If there is an NPU inside a machine, it is inside the processor that equips it.

Which processors have an NPU for AI tasks?

Not all processors, including recent ones, have an NPU by default. Dell cites in particular the new Intel Core Ultra processors, as well as the AMD Ryzen 7000 and 8000 and the Snapdragon 8cx Gen2 from Qualcommas well as higher models.

We can bet on the fact that future processors from different manufacturers will have them as standard. But if your processor is older, it is possible to check whether or not it has an NPU quite easily.

To find out if your current processor is equipped with an NPU, open task manager via CTRL+ALT+DEL and click on “Performance Level”which is the second option in the left menu. If you have an NPU, it simply appears in the list.

If you don’t have one, that doesn’t mean you can’t use AI on your machine, but the experience will not be as good as on a computer that has an NPU. Think about it the next time you consider redoing your configuration!
