Meta introduced Orion, which is expected to become its first full-fledged augmented reality (AR) glasses. However, the prototype will not be put on sale.

The device that Meta unveiled on Wednesday looks like classic glasses, but projects AR images onto the lenses using microLED projectors. These are incorporated into the frame and transmit their image into the user’s field of vision via optical waveguides in the lenses, which are made of silicon carbide. This material is not only lightweight, but also allows for more images thanks to its high refractive index. The glasses must be connected to a wirelessly connected computer puck, which takes care of the calculations.

The glasses are also equipped with a ‘neural bracelet’, which recognizes the user’s ‘hand signals’ through electromyography, and thus serves as a controller for the interface. This is how it can, for example, detect when users press their thumb and index finger against each other, explains The Verge, which was able to test the glasses. The interface can also be operated with the eyes.

Bet on AR and AI

Orion will be able to run various applications, such as WhatsApp and Messenger. According to Meta, the glasses can also be used for video calls, where the person on the other end will see an avatar of the Orion user. In addition, the firm considers that Orion will mainly play a role in AR content and AI. During the presentation, she demonstrated how AR images can be projected on top of the real world with the right depth of field thanks to seven integrated cameras. She also introduced her AI assistant in combination with Orion.

But temporarily, Orion will not go on sale, Meta confirms. For now, glasses are too complex and expensive to produce. Furthermore, the company explains that these glasses are ‘more than a research project’ and are ‘representative’ of something that could be provided to the consumer. Meta now wishes to continue developing the concept internally. Business to follow?
