With the success of the Fallout series on Prime Video, many players have returned to games in the franchise, whether 3, 4, but also New Vegas which remains one of the most popular episodes of the license. And faced with fans’ reactions to the series, the director of this opus spoke to settle the debate.

A hit for the Fallout series on Prime Video

Since Bethesda took over the Fallout license, Fallout New Vegas is considered by many fans to be the best recent installment in the franchise. Even if the latter looks a lot like Fallout 3 from a gameplay point of view due to a pure lack of time (development lasted 18 months), this episode stands out for the quality of its writing and its choices which make it one of the fan favorites of the saga. So obviously, when the Fallout series broadcast on Prime Video which is canon to the rest of the universe contradicts an element of New Vegas, fans do not appreciate. This is where the director of the original game comes into play.

“Whatever happens, I don’t care.”

While the success of the Fallout series on Prime Video is no longer in doubt, the English media Rock, Paper, Shotgun decided to interview Josh Sawyer, the director of Fallout New Vegas. Since then, the developer has still worked at Obsidian in important roles, since he was the director of the two Pillars of Eternity and was recently responsible for the very cool Pentiment. When we ask the 48-year-old developer what he thinks of the choices made by the Prime Video series which contradict certain elements of New Vegas, here is what he answers:

This might sound weird, but whatever happens, I don’t care. My attitude toward the properties I work on, and even the characters I create, is that I don’t own any of that. It never belonged to me. And what I did is what I did.

There are things that I can look at and say, “I don’t think I would have taken it that way,” and there are other things that I think are really cool. But that’s not my area, it’s never been my thing. I was just invited to work on it. So I try to keep a certain distance between myself and the setting.

In other words, Josh Sawyer’s reactions are much more calm than those of the fan community. The latter maintains a certain distance from the licenses on which he worked, only because he has no say in them. In the meantime, this does not prevent players from demanding a Fallout New Vegas 2, something which seems all the more credible since the numerous acquisitions of Microsoft because Bethesda and Obsidian are now part of the same family.
