Video editing just got easier in Google Photos with these new tools

Google continues to improve its Photos app, and more specifically its video editor. AI will be able to automatically select the best moments and apply effects to them.

If you have an Android phone, you probably use the Google Photos app to store all your photos and videos online on the internet giant’s servers. It’s a handy tool that automatically organizes images taken into albums, which can then be shared with friends and family. While the app’s built-in video editor isn’t as feature-rich as a dedicated video editing app, it’s still handy for most users. It offers a range of tools for basic editing, such as cropping and adding effects, all accessible with just a few taps of your finger.

For several months, the American giant has been working on various functions to improve its video editor. Thus, a function to adjust the playback speed of videos had been discovered in a beta version of the application, and traces of code for a function called Spotlight had also been spotted. But all this was not official. In a blog post, Google announced the deployment of improvements to the software interface accompanied by new predefined video settings, powered by AI.

Google Photos: AI to the rescue for editing videos

Now, the Google Photos video editor on Android displays the various editing tools, such as stabilization, color enhancement or mute, in the center of the screen, in the form of a carousel. The cutting tool has also been updated and allows you to cut videos with greater precision. Google has also added a new auto-enhance button that will take care of improving colors, adjusting and stabilizing the video.

Google is taking advantage of this update to introduce a new tool on Android that allows you to adjust the playback speed of videos. Slowing down a sequence can help create a dramatic effect, while speeding it up can give a dynamic effect. In short, this tool promises to be very useful!

The Mountain View firm could not ignore AI. Also, the new video editor introduces a “Presets” tab that uses artificial intelligence to simplify editing, this time on Android as well as iOS. Thus, users will be able to choose from several options such as “Basic cut”, which allows you to quickly cut a video and adjust the lighting or speed, “Slow-mo” to add slow motion, or “Track” to apply dynamic tracking of the movement of the main subject, so that the action remains centered on the latter. Enough to simplify the editing process as much as possible!

In short, all these improvements and additions are good news for those who are not very comfortable with editing. Let’s just hope that this doesn’t lead to a certain homogenization of content – already everyone posts the same thing on social networks!
