The secret of its resistance – including to corrosion due to seawater or chlorinated water – lies in the natural formation, on its surface, of a protective layer of oxide. Very adherent, it is said to have the astonishing capacity to regenerate itself! This metal, technically called “transition”, also has the characteristic of being biocompatible, and is therefore very interesting in medicine for manufacturing surgical implants that the body will not reject. Longevity, low thermal conductivity, hardness and scratch resistance five times higher than for stainless steel, safe diving in the waves, hypoallergenic composition in contact with the skin… The use of titanium in watchmaking is not lacking in arguments but has nevertheless been slowed down by a drawback: compared to steel, it has long been criticized for its duller and darker gray color. This disadvantage has disappeared since technological advances have made it possible to give it a shiny, even luminous appearance.
Progress illustrated by the brand new variations of the iconic Aikon collection by Maurice Lacroix: the Swiss brand, known for its perfectionist avant-gardism, has entirely reforged its most urban watch in titanium. It has chosen to combine two types of titanium, grade 2, which is rather matte, and grade 5, which has a spectacular shine. The visual contrast between the two alloys, already striking, is reinforced by a subtle juxtaposition of sandblasted and polished surfaces. Noticeable on the bracelet and the bezel enclosed between the collection’s emblematic riders, this captivating play of light is the result of demanding and meticulous finishing work. Two models benefit from it: the Aikon automatic 42mm, adorned with an elegant gray or bright purple dial with a clous de Paris motif, and the Aikon Chronograph 44mm, offered with a deep purple or gold squared dial enhanced with silver or black counters. Designed for the urban jungle, these ultra-light timepieces are designed to be versatile and functional: an easy-to-change strap system, luminescent displays and 20 bar water resistance make them easily adaptable to an active lifestyle. The brilliantly shiny grade 5 titanium details reinforce the sophistication and distinctive style of the Aikon watches, launched in 2016.
