Nintendo revises its forecasts downwards in the face of disappointing sales from the Switch

The Japanese video game giant Nintendo revised its forecasts for the current year on Tuesday, due to disappointing sales of its living room console, the Switch. Despite the end of year celebrations, video game enthusiasts rushed on the Japanese console, while its successor, the Switch 2, is announced in the course of 2025.
Nintendo provided in October a net profit of 300 billion yen (around 1.87 billion euros) for the current tax year which ends at the end of March. This number was revised at 270 billion (almost 1.7 billion euros) following the last quarterly result of the Kyoto company.
This downward forecast is explained by a decrease in switch sales: 9.54 million consoles were sold between April and December 2024, 30.6% less than a year earlier. On the last quarter alone (October-December), the fall is 30.1%.
Nintendo also sold almost a quarter (24.4%) of less games between April and December 2024, just under 124 million. Super Mario Party Jamboree is the best sale of the year for the Japanese publisher with 6.17 million units sold, ahead of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (5.38 million).

Digital sales were also reported down, by 29% over a year. The Japanese manufacturer is now counting on sales of 1,190 billion yen (around 7.43 billion euros) over the 2024-2025 fiscal year, down compared to its previous estimate of 1.28 Billion de Yen.
These performance at half mast comes as the Switch 2 is announced this year, of which the first tests are scheduled for April. This new machine, expected by players from around the world, will take over from the Switch, released in 2017.
