UNESCO, with its partners and the main stakeholders, meets to launch the International Year of Quantum Sciences and Technology (AISQ), with an opening ceremony at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, indicates the website of organization.

The objective is to increase the collective awareness of the potential for transformation of quantum science and technology to meet crucial global challenges. This launch also serves as an ideas exchange platform, allowing participants to present best practices in terms of education, research and industrial applications in the field of quantum sciences. It will be an opportunity to inspire an interdisciplinary and interregional collaboration and to fill the North-South ditch while promoting inclusive innovation. The opening ceremony also highlights the importance of placing responsible ethics and innovation at the heart of discussions.

Quantum science and technology are at the heart of the most revolutionary innovations of the 21st century, affecting all aspects of modern science and technology. From physics and chemistry to biology and information sciences, quantum research is at the origin of discoveries that shape our understanding of the universe – of the smallest constituent elements of the material to the vast structure of the cosmos. It conceals an immense potential to meet the most pressing challenges that society is faced today. In the coming years, its applications should allow transformative advances in environmental detection, public health and climate change attenuation.

Thanks to its mandate on the fundamental sciences, UNESCO is particularly well placed to raise awareness of the essential role that quantum science plays in the achievement of sustainable development objectives (SDG) and the improvement of living standards, especially in the developing world. Aware of the gap that is widening between the North and the South in terms of quantum research and innovation, UNESCO is devoted to the promotion of greater fairness in this transformer area. This international celebration aims to encourage young people, in particular women of developing countries, to pursue studies and careers in the field of quantum science, by strengthening the essential capacities necessary for a more inclusive and lasting future.

Recognizing the need to provide a unique platform to promote international collaboration, by particularly emphasizing capacity building in the South, the promotion of gender equality in Stim and the fight against emerging quantum fracture, ‘United Nations General Assembly (AGNU) proclaimed on June 7, 2024 the year 2025 “International year of quantum sciences and technologies (ASIQ)”, under the aegis of UNESCO.

As an ASIQ leader, UNESCO, with its partners, organizes the opening ceremony and prepares the activities of the year. These events will focus on the importance of quantum science, will promote international and interdisciplinary cooperation and will focus on the applications of sustainable development, with inspiring openness, interesting round tables and cultural shows to celebrate this important step in the field of science and technology.
