Still the king of camera phones
The Google Pixel 8 Pro does not stand out from its predecessors in terms of design, we still find this recognizable appearance between all with this side bar on the back which houses the photo module. Connoisseurs will however have noticed small changes, such as this matte coating on the back which is of the most beautiful effect as well as the abandonment of the curved screen for a flat screen. Concerning the latter, it is an AMOLED LTPO panel in definition 2,992 x 1,344 pixels with a refresh rate of 120 Hz max and a brightness capable of reaching a peak of 2,400 cd / m².
With the Pixel 8 Pro, Google once again confirms its supremacy in the field of photography. With its 50 Mpx wide-angle main sensor (f / 1.68), a 48 Mpx ultra wide-angle (f / 1.95) and a 48 Mpx x5 telephoto lens (f / 2.8), it lives up to our expectations. The wide-angle and telephoto lenses are notably accompanied by a high-resolution x30 digital zoom, laser autofocus and stabilization and with the image processing algorithm that works wonders, missing a shot is a feat. Let’s not forget the whole range of AI functions like Best Take and the Magic Eraser which can be used to erase/replace elements in a photo as well as to filter sounds from a video.
A companion who will accompany us for a long time
The Google Pixel 8 are the first smartphones to benefit from seven years of software support! In concrete terms, they will receive software updates until 2030 and the Mountain View firm guarantees the availability of spare parts such as the battery or the screen for the same period. The interface itself, Pixel Experience under Android 14, is a real pleasure to use, especially the new features such as creating a wallpaper via generative AI. On the other hand, we cannot consider Pixel Experience to be THE best interface because of a lack of clarity on these new features and a lack of fluidity when it comes to using the AI functions.
In terms of performance, we are on the verge of disappointment for a smartphone launched at more than 1,000 euros. Like the Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8a, the Pixel 8 Pro is equipped with the Google Tensor G3. The latter is clearly behind both on the CPU and the GPU, in the benchmark game, the Pixel 8 Pro does not hold up against a Galaxy S23 Ultra, a Zenfone 10 or even a Xiaomi 13T Pro. On the big games of the Play Store like Genshin Impactthe experience is not totally comfortable. In terms of autonomy, it is honorable, the smartphone can last a day and a half, or even two days if you are careful, but the battery tends to melt very quickly with intensive use.
