Argentina easily dominated Chile 3-0 on Thursday in Buenos Aires in the South American zone of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The Albiceleste thus retains the lead in the qualifiers.

The reigning world champions were able to count on Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister (48th), Atlético Madrid recruit Julian Alvarez (84th) and AS Roma striker Paulo Dybala (91st) to make the difference.

Without the injured Lionel Messi, Argentina were not really in danger, with the Chileans only managing one shot on target in five attempts. Also without Angel Di Maria who has retired from international football, they relied on their young guard in midfield and the pairing of Lautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez up front.

Argentina thus retains the lead in the qualifiers in the South American zone with 18 points in seven matches, ahead of Uruguay (13), who can come back to within two lengths if they win against Paraguay on Friday. Brazil is currently only 6th, with 7 points won in 6 games.
