RONALDO CALLED UP FOR NATIONS LEAGUE, LEAO ALSO THERE

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has named Cristiano Ronaldo in his squad for the first two games of the Nations League. Martinez announced today the players selected for the home games against Croatia on September 5 and Scotland on September 8. The 39-year-old Ronaldo, who currently plays for Al Nassr, was coming off a disappointing European Championship in Germany, where he failed to score a goal until Portugal’s quarter-final elimination on penalties by France. Martinez said his team was starting “a new cycle for the 2026 World Cup” after Euro 2024. Ronaldo would be 41 when the tournament begins in North America. AC Milan’s Rafa Leao has also been named in Portugal’s Nations League squad. The squad is as follows: Goalkeepers: Diogo Costa (Porto), Josè Sá (Wolverhampton), Rui Silva (Real Betis). Defenders: Rúben Dias (Manchester City), António Silva (Benfica), Renato Veiga (Chelsea), Gonçalo Inacio (Sporting), Tiago Santos (Lille), Diogo Dalot (Manchester United), Nuno Mendes (Paris Saint-Germain), Ne’lson Semedo (Wolverhampton). Midfielders: João Palhinha (Bayern Munich), João Neves (Paris Saint-Germain), Vitinha (Paris Saint-Germain), Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United), Bernardo Silva (Manchester City), Rúben Neves (Al-Hilal), João Fe’lix (Chelsea), Francisco Trincão (Sporting), Pedro Gonçalves (Sporting).
