If it weren’t for her, there wouldn’t be any fish soup either

Bora Đorđević was one of the biggest rock stars of the Balkans. Of his numerous songs, he always singled out one special one.

Look at your home, angel, is the song with which Riblja chorba ended their concerts. It is a song that appeared on the album Istina in 1985 and immediately became a hit.

It was declared the hit of that year, and in 1995 Standard magazine declared it the hit of the decade. It is considered one of the best rock songs of the Yugoslav rock scene, and Bora Đorđević himself, in an interview for the magazine Rok, which was produced by Peca Popović, chose this particular song when he had to choose just one of all the ones he had done, reports City Magazin .

If it weren’t for that track, there would be no Fish Soup

“She means everything! But it also means great satisfaction. If it weren’t for that track, there wouldn’t be any more Fish Soup. When Bajaga and Rajko left, the process of our general funeral began. It was also the first song practiced by the new line-up. As soon as we recorded it, I knew what we had on our hands. I was not mistaken in my assessment of its significance. When they told me in “Jugoton” that that track could not be on the record for a hundred reasons, I firmly said: “Don’t even think about it!”

I immediately put it under my wing, went back to PGP RTB and they accepted it, although it was a bit tricky for them too. Even today, after so much time, I enjoy singing it. It represents to me more than a song and marks my turn in writing lyrics. I became a little weirder, freer and different than in the other tracks”, said Bora Čorba at the time.

The song is named after the novel of the same name by Thomas Wolfe, which in part described the years of the American crisis, and as Đorđević said, it was written by itself.

“The song ‘Look at your home angel’ was created in an unusual way, because it was written by itself. She went past my will, the images came by themselves; It’s not the most correct rhyme, but that’s how it came to me,” he said in the show “While the Angels Sleep”.

“I wrote it for a very long time in order to be completely satisfied with every word. And then the song had its own life. It sounds different in every place – when the band plays it, when the choir sings it and the symphony orchestra plays,” added Bora.

The song “Pogledaj dom svoj anđele” is a criticism of society and the world, and the singer addresses the “angels” who do not want to see the terrible things happening around them.

The music video for this song was released on MTV in 1987, as the first music video from the Balkans, during the presentation of the most successful bands in the world in those years.
