Sinner beats Paul 3-0 and is in the quarterfinals of the US Open. Now Medvedev

Jannik wins 7-6 7-6 6-1 against the American. The world number 1 will meet the Russian for a rematch at Wimbledon and a place in the semi-finals

Jannik Sinner in Frecciarossa version knocks down Tommy Paul 7-6 7-6 6-1 and conquers the quarterfinals in New York, where his archrival Daniil Medvedev awaits him. The world number 1 is the only player to have managed to reach the top 8 in all the Slams of the season (youngest to do so since Djokovic at 20 years old in 2007) and against the Russian he hopes to improve his record in the Big Apple, where he has never managed to get past the quarterfinals. Jannik improves on last year’s result, when he stopped after a battle in the round of 16 against Sascha Zverev. On Wednesday against Medvedev he will try to shorten the distances in the previous matches, 7-5 for the Russian, who returned to beat him at Wimbledon after 5 consecutive defeats.

THE MATCH

Jannik Sinner, who is kind at heart, decides to give up his serve twice in the first set to keep the sleepy Italian fans awake, but recovers them immediately, winning the first set at the tie break. The South Tyrolean scores seven more points despite the greater number of errors, 21 to 15. Good performance on serve with 73% of points with the first serve, and 59% of first serves in play. A test of technical and mental strength for the world number 1 who did it all by himself, sending the confidence of the American into a tailspin. The second set, however, sees Paul already in difficulty in the first service game, where he ends 0-30 but with four consecutive points he holds serve. There is a substantial balance without any flashes from the two contenders. Sinner manages the service game of the eighth game with great lucidity, closing at love for the 4-4 but Paul takes the lead 5-4 thanks to two beautiful runs at the net. Very delicate service game for Jannik Sinner who needs to stay in the set. Two good first serves for 30-0 and a rally always under pressure concluded with a perfect backhand down the line for 40-0. Another first serve for 5-5 and still remaining in balance, which risks breaking in the 11th game, with the American who from 40-0 lets himself be caught up and concedes a break point to Sinner who is unable to complete the job. It is also a tie break in the 2nd set, with several reversals of front. Sinner however makes the difference when he serves and closes on the first set point on Paul’s serve. For the world no. 1 it is the 18th tie break won out of 24 played. The third starts with a slip and some concerns for the hip of the world no. 1 who dispels any doubts by taking a break lead, 3-0. The Italian doubles the advantage, goes up 5-1 and when he serves for the match concedes two break points to the American. No way, Sinner closes 6-1, you don’t become number 1 by chance.
