He never wanted to grow up and is now turning 75: Peter Maffay is celebrating his birthday on Friday, which ARD is taking as an opportunity to change its program. The celebrations will be held with an hour-long documentary that focuses primarily on the legendary musician’s recently concluded farewell tour.

In 1970, Peter Maffay celebrated his breakthrough with the pop ballad “Du”, but he never aspired to a career like Roy Black’s. Maffay quickly tried to establish himself as a rock musician, but it took several years before he managed to change his image and achieve his true calling. With the album “Steppenwolf” he topped the charts for the first time in the late 1970s and repeated this success more often than anyone else in Germany in the decades to come.

After more than 50 years on stage, Peter Maffay embarked on a farewell tour this year, which ended in July in Leipzig in front of more than 50,000 fans. Maffay was accompanied by filmmaker Andreas Heineke, who not only portrayed the departing superstar on and behind the stage, but also accompanied him on a family trip to his homeland of Romania. Aside from rock songs like “Sonne in der Nacht”, Peter Maffay is of course also known as the creator of the little dragon Tabaluga, which he invented in 1983 together with children’s songwriter Rolf Zuckowski and lyricist Gregor Rottschalk.
