Tropical development possible in the Caribbean and Gulf

SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) – The WLOX First Alert Weather Team is monitoring tropical activity in the Atlantic Ocean this week. There is no imminent threat to South Mississippi at this time, but a tropical wave moving into the Caribbean next week bears watching.

In addition, an area of low pressure near the coast of Texas and Louisiana has a low chance of developing into a tropical system.

The NHC has two areas highlighted for possible tropical development over the next seven days.(WLOX)

Tropical Wave 1 – Central Tropical Atlantic

Disorganized showers and thunderstorms with a tropical wave continue to slowly drift west across the central tropical Atlantic. Gradual development is expected as it moves into the Caribbean early in the week.

Models continue to show this system strengthening in the Caribbean and possibly moving into the Gulf within the next 10 days. There is still a lot of uncertainty in the future of this system, so be sure to stay on the lookout for updates to the forecast. It’s never a bad idea to review your hurricane supply kit and preparedness plan as we enter the peak of hurricane season.

A tropical wave in the Atlantic has a decent chance of development once it moves into the Caribbean. It could move into the Gulf within the next ten days.(WLOX)

Gulf System – Near Lake Charles, LA

A slow moving low pressure system off the coast of Louisiana has a low chance of developing into a tropical system over the next five to seven days.

Regardless of development, this system is expected to continue bringing heavy rainfall to parts of the Gulf Coast over Labor Day weekend and by the middle of the week. This system has already brought 2-3 inches of rain to coastal Mississippi and another 2-4 inches will be possible through the middle of next week.

An broad area of low pressure in the Gulf will bring heavy rainfall to parts of the Gulf Coast. There is a low chance it could become a tropical depression.(WLOX)

TROPICAL TAKEAWAYS

It is too early to determine if either of the tropical waves in the Atlantic will have any impact on the U.S. mainland. Once these systems develop a center of circulation, they will be easier to forecast and track. The best thing to do for now is simply continue to watch the latest updates on any developments or changes.

Long range outlook(WLOX)

The climatological peak of hurricane season will arrive within the next two weeks on September 10. The next name on the list is Francine.
